The principle aim of the Art Department is to build the students’ creative, critical and practical skills in order to develop their knowledge and understanding of Art and Photography, so that they are able to achieve to the best of their ability. Consequently, our curriculum sets out to engage, enthuse and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment imaginatively and intuitively create their own works of art. Students will be able to independently engage with theory to explore both contemporary and modern art with insight. Students are taught by practicing artists who work in a variety of art specialisms ranging from fine art painting and drawing to photography and darkroom specialisms. The skills that we teach our students prepare them for academic and vocational paths of progression in Art and Photography.

The Art Department has dedicated rooms, located around a sixth form art and photography area where A level students can continue to work in their free time. Students have access to a wide range of Art resources such as a kiln, a photography studio and dark room. We proudly display the work of Art and Photography students across the school. This culminates at the end of each year in an Art and Photography exhibition to celebrate students’ creative abilities and their achievement in the qualifications they are working towards. Students work with the teachers to curate their first art exhibition.

The Department provides daily opportunities for students to develop their work independently at lunchtimes and during free periods. We organise regular trips where students take part in artist led workshops. Students have also independently organised art clubs for other year groups where they introduce themes of interest for exploration, for example, comic book design and photography workshops. We have a suite of computers in all three rooms so that students can become proficient in design and illustration software such as Photoshop that students can use to support their learning and extend their creativity.
