Sociology is about helping students towards a critical understanding of their social, political and cultural environment through engaging with classic and recent sociological theories and studies. It is concerned with understanding the processes of how individuals generate meaning in the context of the social community and the wider society. The Sociology curriculum intends to deliver content in a formal manner with reference to exam questions within each lesson based on the AQA SOW to develop students’ examination skills. The curriculum aims to ensure students are aware of the various life chances of different social groups and are able to explore theories, which question how society is structured. Core content is taught in a linear manner, where students are expected to apply their knowledge to 12 marker exam questions.
The curriculum intends to develop students’ communication, and social skills and encourages students to become familiar with key concepts and examination language through peer and self-assessment, modelling of answers and class debates. The curriculum also aims to create independent and self-reflective learners who foster a passion for the subject. Sociology is about equipping students to be able to read and write confidently. Students engage with a variety of concepts and texts – they must be able to understand, summarise and evaluate these using good English. Sociology also enables learners to have a firmer understanding of the global world and current affairs.
