TFA girls celebrate International Women’s Day and National Careers Day at Wembley Stadium – March 2023
The Wembley trip was a fantastic opportunity for our Year 9 and Year 10 pupils to gain an insight into possible careers women’s football can provide. They started their day talking to inspiring women who shared their journey of working for the FA, career challenges they faced, how women’s football has evolved and how opportunities for women have opened up. Our pupils were offered advice career within the footballing industry, from medical support, to presenting and professional football.
Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Wembley Stadium, taking in the rich history, as well as the changing room, press room, players’ tunnel and press room, and most importantly the iconic pitch.
The last part of the day, pupils were welcomed by Lioness legend Rachel Yankey, who spoke about her journey through football, the barriers and struggles she encountered on her way to becoming the first women to obtain a professional contract. The students were also given the opportunity to ask her questions, as well as take pictures and to have autographs/memorabilia signed.
Our pupils said, “We really enjoyed the trip as most of us have never been to a football stadium. They spoke to us about all the different job opportunities within football and sports. You don’t have to like football to work within sports and you don’t have to be the best player to play football within the community, follow your dreams and have no regrets.”
